France has over 200 ski resorts, and with the explosion in development over the last 10 years, there are ski apartments for sale France to suit every type of activity and every budget. At the moment it is a great time to buy, with interest rates extremely low and the buyer’s Pound high!
French ski resorts are found in the Jura and Pyrenees, but those most popular with British buyers are undoubtedly in the French Alps. Where you buy your ski property, of course, depends on your budget, and what your priorities are. Up till a decade ago, the affordable options were very few, but property is increasingly becoming available in smaller and less well-known resorts. A major factor that has made buying ski property a more realistic proposition is the leaseback ski properties France scheme, introduced by the French government several decades ago to increase the accommodation supply in popular skiing areas. For simpler and more affordable properties, you can look at newer resorts, like Tignes and Chatel. There are recently-built one-bedroom apartments starting at around €130K available in Chatel, and priced around €230K in Tignes. A bijou studio in a non-fashionable resort could be obtainable for as little as €50K, though two-bed apartments are more popular if you want to rent out your property. A good selection of these for around €250 – €300K can be found in the family-friendly village of Arc 1800, the newest development in the resort of Les Arcs.
There is of course a wide variation in ski accommodation in France, starting with the delightful traditional wooden chalets, including the top-of-the-range ones in the most expensive and chic resorts like Val d’Isère. However, most ski regions also contain a wealth of modern apartment blocks, which enable resorts to accommodate the maximum number of visitors, while retaining a spacious feel. A large number of these properties are now being designed to look like a chalet styled property, rather than the concrete blocks of yester-year, and can be very luxurious inside. You can find apartment blocks like this in purpose-built resorts like Flaine in the Grand Massif.
There are also some very attractive timber apartment blocks, which bring a chalet look to the apartment style. You can see many of these in Courchevel in the Three Valleys. Many of these apartment blocks, whether concrete or timber, offer features such as communal ski storage and locker areas, meaning you can maximize the space in your apartment.
As well as France, Switzerland is also very popular with UK ski property buyers, with Wengen and Verbier topping the list. However, Haute-Nendaz in the next valley to Verbier is an attractive resort with apartments and Ski chalets for sale Switzerland at one-third to half the prices of those in Verbier. Swiss ski properties were traditionally built of wood in Alpine style, but have undergone huge transformations in recent years, with stone facades, and large sheets of glass to maximize views.
